Can flagmen do this???

There has been much in the news regarding replacing police details with flagmen. Here are two recent incidents where Officers working private details were able to provide quick assistance to the regular patrol force:
  • Ofc. John Delorey was on a police detail on Lowell Street when Dispatchers reported a shoplifting in progress at CVS Pharmacy.  A description of the suspect, the suspect vehicle, and the direction of travel were broadcast to all units.  A quick thinking Ofc. Delorey slowed the traffic on Lowell Street where he subsequently observed the suspect vehicle.  He detained the suspect until patrol units could respond and take him into custody.
  • Ofc. Matt Stavro was on a lunch break from a police detail.  He was walking into a sandwich shop on Main Street when dispatch reported that a pedestrian had been struck by a motor vehicle in the parking lot of Wilmington Plaza.  Ofc. Stavro responded and was able to provide emergency care until patrol units and the Wilmington Fire Department arrived at the scene.
